Purpose:
Assess your ability to work with color for creating a variety of effects.
Instructions:
- Use one of your photographs and resize the image to no more than 100K.
- Make four copies of your resized image and apply the following treatments:
- Image One: Use a sepia tone
- Image Two: Use a different "Single Color" of your choice.
- Image Three: Keep the foreground object/image in color, while making the background in a single color or black and white. (make sure to keep the quality of the background intact)
- Image Four: Display a final corrected image using the best possible tonal corrections for the image.
- Describe the procedures used to apply these treatments, including level numbers, etc. to achieve the desired results.
- Post a total of five images: The original un-edited image followed by all four manipulated images.

Steps Taken for Each Image Manipulation:
My husband took this picture of me at Sun Studios in Memhis, TN. The studio claims this is the original microphone
Elvis used when he recorded his music there.
- I resized the original picture to approximately 4"X6" with a 72 dpi resolution, and then made four
duplicate copies.
- Image 1: I went to the Enhance Menu, chose Adjust Color, and then Adjust Hue/Saturation. I checked the Colorize
Box and changed; Hue: 34; Saturation: 50; Brighten: -64; Darkened: -26; I then went to the Adjust Brightness/Contrast
choice and changed those to Brightness: -25; Contrast: -6. I went back and brightened the image just a tad through the
Adjust Lighting and Brightness choices.
- Image 2: I went to the Enhance Menu, chose Adjust Color, and then Adjust Hue/Saturation. I checked the Colorize
Box and changed; Hue: 234; Saturation: 65; Lightness: -16. I then went back and brightened it
just a tad through the
Adjust Lighting and Brightness choices.
- Image 3: This time, I used the Smart Brush, chose the Infrared choice, selected myself, and chose Inverse
from the
Select Menu, which then produced a different type of the black, gray, and white look.
- Image 4: For the final image, I selected my face with the Quick Selection Tool, went to the Enhance Menu, chose
Adjust Color, and then chose Adjust Color for Skin Tone and adjusted the tan and blush levels
(not sure if this was an improvent?). I did the same thing for my hand. I then selected myself again,
chose the Inverse from the Select Menu,
went back to the Enhance Menu, chose Adjust Color, and chose
Color Variation this time. From here, I darkened it by
two clicks. I then selected only my sweatshirt,
went back to Enhance Menu, chose Adjust Color, and chose Adjust Hue/Saturation and changed the Hue
level to +20.
(NOTE: my actual sweatshirt looks more like the final picture; it must have been the
original lighting in the building)
